The Project:
Through its coordination activities and network, MOCASIN' aim has been to exploit the use of mathematics with social and economic sciences in the study of cultural dynamics and the social process of cultural transmission.
The strategic objectives of MOCASIN were:
- To draw up a strategic picture of European resources, networks, and of the use of mathematics in fields relevant to cultural dynamics, and so identify and pursue new opportunities for better understanding the social processes of culture transmission.
- To evolve cross-disciplinary research methods for collaborative activity between mathematics and the social sciences by promoting studies, led at five European centres, in specific areas of cultural dynamics, including criminality, market behaviour, cultural evolution, conflict and competition.
- To establish long term integration and growth of activities in cultural dynamics with mathematics through a programme of collaborative events and researcher training and mobility.
MOCASIN has coordinated research activity in established centres and spawn activities in new centres, so growing high quality interdisciplinary research in a number of different aspects of cultural dynamics. A prospectus of high impact and exciting research opportunities between social scientists and mathematicians has laid the basis of future research and development activity, while a cycle of conferences and events, and a programme of researcher development, have fostered wider interactions and dissemination between mathematics and the social sciences and between different applications in the field of cultural dynamics.
By improving scientific collaboration and methods for quantifying the ways in which culture and cultural traits are transmitted, MOCASIN has strengthened the basis for strategic decision-making on central issues regarding the quality of life and provide better understanding of the cultural factors and developments that impact upon the economy and business.
Through its coordination activities and network, MOCASIN has demonstrated how to exploit the use of mathematics with the social and economic sciences in the study of cultural dynamics and the social process of cultural transmission.
